Campaigning for new sources of development finance
Action Update - May 2006

Treasury receives 30,000 emails – thanks to you

Between the middle of January and the end of February the Chancellor received tens of thousands of emails from Stamp Out Poverty supporters. The messages urged his backing for the Air Ticket Levy in the run-up to its launch in Paris on 28 February.

To keep up the momentum of the campaign and find out more about the Treasury response, please click on the ACTION page. We need you to write an urgent letter to Gordon Brown, via your MP, here’s how.

Stamp Out Poverty survey – join our Briefing and Social Evening

Thank you to all who replied to our recent survey. It has been very useful in helping us to gain more knowledge of the profile of our supporters. A very good proportion of you responded, giving us a valuable insight into how you would like to get involved in moving the campaign forward. We found that 90% of respondents were in the UK. We were happy also to discover that we have supporters in every major continent! (North America, South America, Africa, Asia, Australia and across Europe.)

Many of you were keen to learn more about the issues. As a consequence we are pleased to announce that we are going to hold a Briefing and Social Evening on Tuesday 25th July from 6.30 to 8:30pmwhere we will discuss the issues and the campaign and answer your questions. The evening will be an opportunity for those curious to find out more and meet other people who are interested in international development issues.

We will start with a half hour briefing from the Stamp Out Poverty team, including the campaign coordinator and Sony Kapoor, who is Christian Aid’s advisor on international finance. There will then be an opportunity to ask questions, followed by a discussion and next steps session.

The evening will start at 6.30pm and we aim to finish by 8.30pm. We are happy to continue in a local pub afterwards. Our offices are easy to get to via public transport, being just a two minute walk from London Liverpool Street station and a five minute walk from Moorgate or Bank tube stations. Our address is 83 London Wall, London EC2M 5ND. (To see a map of exactly where we are, click here.)

If you would like to attend, please let us know in advance either by phone, on 020 7374 0305, or by emailing Lucian – . To enable us to get an idea of numbers attending, please RSVP by 11th July at the latest. Thank you!

As well, many of you stated that you were happy to write letters to Ministers. We are happy to take you up on the offer – please click on the ACTION page now.

Stamp Out Poverty advice to UK Development Department

Last month, Stamp Out Poverty, submitted a policy paper to the Department for International Development (DfID) in response to a white paper seeking NGO input on eliminating world poverty. Our submission clearly sets out how the government should proceed to take action and implement innovative sources of additional finance.

Our final recommendations form the content of the letter we would like as many of you as possible to write urgently to Gordon Brown. Click here for the ACTION page.
