Actor Bill Nighy and writer/director Richard Curtis helped launch the Robin Hood Tax Campaign today, appearing on both BBC and ITV News. Together they have made a brilliant 3 minute film, starring Bill as the banker. Sharp and amusing, it shows how a very small tax on the financial sector could raise billions to tackle poverty and climate change at home and abroad.
This has given an enormous boost to Stamp Out Poverty’s long standing work for greater taxation of the financial sector. Our proposal for a Currency Transaction Levy is at the heart of this new campaign.
Yesterday, a 10-metre high projection on the Bank of England asked early-morning City folk to “be part of the world’s greatest bank job”. A few shorts hours later and we have already received coverage on BBC, ITV and Sky News, with articles appearing in The Sun, Mail, Telegraph, Guardian, FT and New York Times. 60 people a minute are currently signing up to the campaign and right now it is reaching more people than any other topic on Twitter.
